SPU Customers Beware Of Bill Scam

Sun Prairie Utilities is receiving telephone inquiries from customers about suspicious phone calls and emails they have received. The solicitor is telling these people that they are behind 2 months with their utility bill and that their water and electric services will be disconnected. These calls are not originating from Sun Prairie Utilities.

These imposters are attempting to collect money on false claims of over due balance or of upgrades/repairs to metering equipment. They are requesting payment with a prepaid debit card or wire transfer, often threatening service disconnection.

Sun Prairie Utilities will not require direct payment over the phone, nor solicit for a specific payment method. If you receive a suspicious call regarding your utility service, do not give out any personal information. If you ever question the legitimacy of the caller, hang up and call us at 837-5500. Our employees wear SP Utilities logo apparel and always carry employment ID cards.

If you receive a suspicious call, contact the Sun Prairie Police Department at 837-7336. The police have been notified of this activity and request your call information. You could also file a complaint with the Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection at 608-225-5012, or file a complaint online.
