Conservation Tips

The American Water Works Association and Public Service Commission recommend the following steps to help conserve water:

  • Don't over water your lawn. Only water every three to five days in the summer
  • To prevent water loss from evaporation, don't water your lawn during the hottest part of the day or when it is windy.
  • Only run the dishwasher and clothes washer when they are fully loaded.
  • Defrost frozen food in the refrigerator or in the microwave instead of running water over it.
  • When washing dishes by hand, use two basins - one for washing and one for rinsing rather than let the water run.
  • Use a broom, rather than a hose, to clean sidewalks and driveways.
  • If you have a swimming pool, get a cover. You'll cut the loss of water by evaporation by 90 percent.
  • Repair dripping faucets and leaky toilets. Dripping faucets can waste about 2,000 gallons of water each year.
  • Leaky toilets can waste as much as 300 gallons each day.

Sun Prairie Utilities Water Conservation Plan

Effective June 4, 2010, Sun Prairie Utilities had developed and offers water conservation education and incentives to residential customers. SPU encourages property owners specifically with pre-1994 water fixtures to utilize our conservation kit and start saving on water, and utility bills. Water customers of the utility can stop by the utility office at 125 W Main Street to pick up a conservation tip wheel.

Toilet Replacement Rebate

As an incentive to replace older (pre-1994) or leaky toilets, Sun Prairie Utilities is offering a bill credit rebate of 50% of the purchase price, up to $50, for customers to replace these old water hogs and replace them with an EPA Water Sense certified High Efficiency Toilet. Qualifying toilets will bear the Water Sense logo on the packaging. A list can be found on the EPA Water Sense website.
