In Wisconsin, utilities now have the statutory right to to disconnect service for overdue balances. Many customers have been adversely affected due to their circumstance and have accumulated high utility account balances. SPU has placed a temporary pause on disconnections as we exit the coronavirus emergency to allow customers to work out reasonable payment arrangements prior to service disconnection. SPU urges any customer with a past due utility account balance to contact the SPU Business Office at 608-837-5500 and discuss their repayment plan options sooner than later. Customers in arrears who have not entered into an active deferred payment arrangement could be subject to service disconnection in June.
There are resources available for financial assistance for past due rent or utilities. Customers should contact the following agencies to see if there is any help available to them:
Energy Services of Dane County 608-333-0333
Joining Forces for Families/ Sunshine Place 608-825-3225
Tenant Resource Center of Dane County 608-257-0006
Community Action Coalition for South Central Wisconsin 608-246-4730
The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin again permits residential service disconnections. SPU wishes to engage now with any and all customers who are past due to minimize potential service disconnections. Customers should call the SPU Business Office at 608-837-5500 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. As we look forward to warmer weather and Spring, it is especially important that customers contact the utility now to avoid disconnection later.
