SUN PRAIRIE, (Wis.) — Sun Prairie Utilities has filed an application with the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSC) to increase water rates. The increase is necessary to maintain the reliability of our water distribution system and to cover the costs of our new operations facility on Linnerud Drive.
The total increase in water revenues requested by SPU is $1,867,749, which will result in an estimated overall rate increase of 35.84 percent over SPU’s present revenues, which would be implemented in two steps.
- The proposed Step One increase of $1,487,316 would take effect following the issuance of the Final Decision.
- The proposed Step Two increase would be an additional increase of $380,433 over Step One rates.
- SPU would implement the remaining Step Two increase when the Well No. 10 project, as authorized in docket 5810-CW-109, is completed and placed into service.
If the request is granted, the water bill for an average residential customer with a ⅝-inch meter who uses 600 cubic feet of water per month will increase from $27.74 to $35.81, or 29.09 percent, including the public fire protection charge, after Step One is implemented, and from $35.81 to $37.68, or 5.22 percent, after Step Two is implemented, for a combined increase over current rates of $27.74 to $37.68, or 35.83 percent.
To learn more about Step Two increases, visit the PSC website. Additional information on water-related projects can be found in the annual Water Quality Report on SPU’s website.
The last full water rate case was completed in December 2021 for an overall increase of 20.85%. SPU implemented a simplified water rate increase of 8.00% in January 2024. A simplified rate increase is a process that helps utilities maintain revenue continuity. You can read more about this on the PSC website.
PSC staff will review the application, make any adjustments to the revenue requirement, hold a public hearing, and issue their final decision before the new rates are implemented.
