SPU Submits Water Rate Increase Application to PSC of WI

SUN PRAIRIE, (Wis.) — Sun Prairie Utilities has filed an application with the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSC) to increase water rates. The increase is necessary to maintain the reliability of our water distribution system and to cover the costs of our new operations facility on Linnerud Drive.

The total increase in water revenues requested by Sun Prairie Utilities is $1,489,742. If the request is granted by the PSC, the water bill for an average residential customer with a ⅝-inch meter who uses 540 cubic feet of water per month will increase from $20.50 to $26.35, or $5.85 per month, a 28.52% increase. Including public fire protection, the average bill would increase by $7.58 per month.

The last full water rate case was completed in December 2021 for an overall increase of 20.85%. Sun Prairie Utilities implemented a simplified water rate increase of 8.00% in January 2024. A simplified rate increase is a process that helps utilities maintain revenue continuity. You can read more about this on the PSC website.

The water rate case application filed with the PSC includes an optional Step Two increase request for Well No. 10 near the Sun Prairie East High School. The Sun Prairie Utilities Commission would approve the implementation of the Step Two increase before it can go into effect, with final completion noted to the PSC. To learn more about Step Two increases, visit the PSC website. Additional information on water-related projects can be found in the annual Water Quality Report on SPU’s website.

PSC staff will review the application, make any adjustments to the revenue requirement, hold a public hearing, and issue their final decision before the new rates are implemented. SPU will share additional information about the public hearing with customers once the details are finalized, so customers can share their input. All documents in this docket are filed on the Commission’s Electronic Records Filing (ERF) system. To view the Application, please visit the PSC website at https://psc.wi.gov, select “eServices” from the top menu, then “Docket Search”, and enter PSC Case # of 5810-WR-107.
